A landmarkshaped by time

Completed in 1962 as the international headquarters of British Petroleum (BP), Frederiksplein 42 is one of the finest examples of refined post-war modernism. A connected business environment embedded within one of Amsterdam’s most vibrant mixed-use neighbourhoods. Set among leading institutions, international headquarters, hospitality, retail and residential living.

Rooted in Amsterdam.Reimagined for tomorrow.

Designed by Piet Zanstra, the office building introduced a level of international presence that was largely unprecedented in Amsterdam at the time. Its precast concrete façade, rational floor plans and elegant proportions remain defining architectural qualities today. Throughout its history, Frederiksplein 42 has accommodated prominent national and international tenants, including BP, Hogan Lovells and Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-ix).

“Our ambition is to restore the building’s original grandeur with care and clarity, while preparing it for contemporary office use. A new entrance creates a welcoming arrival experience, enhancing accessibility and drawing generous daylight deep into the garden level. The landscaped courtyard provides a calm, green setting for informal meetings and everyday use, reconnecting the building with its surroundings.

While preserving its defining architectural features, the comprehensive renewal delivers state-of-the-art office spaces — a future-ready environment that balances heritage with Paris Proof, low-carbon performance.”

“The goal was clear: to transform Frederiksplein 42 through an integrated energy concept that elevates its performance beyond the sustainability standards of new construction, proving that, with innovative engineering, historic architecture can be revitalized for a truly sustainable future, without compromise for its users: strong flexibility in layout, exceptional energetic performance paired with the highest-quality building services, resulting in a renovation strategy that achieves Paris Proof, CRREM alignment, Climate class A and BREEAM-NL Excellent.”

Interior architect

TANK – Tommy Kleerekoper

Given the building’s beautiful, refined post-war modernist architecture, TANK’s ambition was to create an interior that connects conceptually to its 1960s origins while retaining a contemporary character.
Approaching directly from Frederikspark, visitors are drawn in by the imposing revolving door. The double-height entrance creates a grand arrival experience, accentuated by clad columns and strong vertical lines.

With ‘understated luxury’ as the guiding principle for the high-end interior fit-out, key touchpoints throughout the building have been carefully elevated.

The material palette is deliberately restrained, combining warm walnut-stained timber with the cool grey tones of the concrete structure. Together, these materials create a modernist, no-nonsense elegance.

The office floors offer generous proportions and panoramic views across the city park. Designed with flexibility in mind, the spaces are fitted out to accommodate a variety of office space configurations. Wherever possible, the building has been stripped back to its essence. This creates openness and height, and forges a stronger connection to the original architecture through the careful exposure of its structural elements.

On a personal note, I fell in love with this building many years ago, living with my family on the Frederiksplein. Over time, I have witnessed the neighbourhood evolve into one of Amsterdam’s most desirable districts. Utrechtsestraat, Frederiksplein and the former Dutch Bank have all been redeveloped to meet the expectations of a cosmopolitan city. This building has always held a special appeal, and I am thrilled to be part of the team bringing the final piece of this urban puzzle to life with our interior design.
